Providing the Delicate Balance of Care and Humanity
SAILS understands that whether you are a nurse, doctor, mental health professional, or midwife…you ride along in the sidecar with the family that has suffered the traumatic nightmare of a miscarriage, stillborn or child death before the first birthday. You, too, are just as sorry for the sadness and the deafening silence that envelopes the room.
Thankfully, most births end in happiness; however, for those that don’t, the weight is heavy, and you are incredibly courageous to sherpa parents through this passage of the first and only hello and goodbye. We at SAILS know the importance of your role and want to partner with you to offer the best continuing education so that you can be the best guide for a family and take in their physical and emotional needs while taking care of yourself. According to PubMed, How Physicians Cope with Stillbirth or Neonatal Death: A National Survey of Obstetricians, “Seventy-five percent of respondents reported that caring for a patient with a stillbirth took a large emotional toll on them personally, and nearly one in 10 obstetricians reported they had considered giving up the obstetric practice because of the emotional difficulty in caring for a patient with a stillbirth. Talking informally with colleagues (87%) or friends and family (56%) were the most common strategies used by physicians to personally cope with these situations.” SAILS developed the most comprehensive training program that helps you care for grieving families and cope with your emotions after this devastating event.
